Alliance Welcomes Pending Confirmation of Gov. Granholm as Energy Secretary

Release Date: Thursday, February 25, 2021

WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy welcomed the pending confirmation of former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm as Secretary of Energy, citing her success expanding energy efficiency programs in Michigan and her vision for a clean energy future that benefits all Americans. Granholm’s nomination advanced through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee earlier this month with bipartisan support.

“It’s hard to think of a better choice for this position than Gov. Granholm,” said Alliance President Paula Glover. “She is singularly focused on making the clean energy transition in a way that creates jobs and economic opportunity for all of our communities, particularly those facing hardship. I would argue that no energy sector does that better than energy efficiency, and we look forward to working with her on expanding the efficiency workforce and getting Americans back on the job. This is critically important as the administration and Congress make plans to help Americans move forward from the devastating economic consequences of COVID-19.”

“Gov. Granholm understands this is about maintaining America’s global leadership in the energy economy. As Gov. Granholm said in her nomination hearing last month, ‘You skate to where the puck is going.’ She did just that as governor, when among other initiatives she oversaw Michigan’s adoption of new energy efficiency programs that significantly improved the state’s efficiency performance and strengthened its economy. I have no doubt she will have similar success leading the Department of Energy and using the many tools the agency has to capitalize on the enormous benefits of energy efficiency.”
