Have you ever wondered what we really know about the Earth’s energy resources and the technologies used to extract them? Although we extract and use coal, uranium, and geothermal energy to supply electricity to much of the country, a lot of attention and discussion in the last several years has focused on increased oil and gas production in the United States, particularly from what are called ‘unconventional’ oil and gas resources.

Join us for a lively panel conversation moderated by Richard Harris, Science Correspondent, National Public Radio, about what we know, what we do not know, and where research could a make a difference for all stakeholders in stewarding the future development of unconventional oil and gas resources. Ask questions, dig deeper, and explore the fundamentals of this issue.

Panelists include:

  • Steven Hamburg, Chief Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund
  • Robert Kleinberg, Physicist, Schlumberger
  • Douglas Duncan, Associate Program Coordinator, Energy Resources Program, U.S. Geological Survey

Admission is $10, $7 for students and fellows, and includes pizza and light refreshments. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.

This program is held in collaboration with the National Research Council’s Board on Earth Sciences and Resources.
