Data Center Efficiency Working Group

Advancing smarter, more efficient load growth in the age of AI

Artificial intelligence is driving a rapid increase in electricity demand. Data centers could consume up to nine percent of U.S. electricity by 2030, prompting urgent decisions on grid reliability, costs, and system planning.

The Alliance to Save Energy’s Data Center Efficiency Working Group brings together utilities, regulators, technology companies, and data center developers to ensure energy efficiency is central to how we manage this growth.

Why it matters

Rising data center demand is creating real challenges:

  • Grid reliability risks
  • Higher costs for customers
  • Siting and community concerns
  • Pressure on system planning

This initiative focuses on practical, scalable solutions that address these challenges while supporting continued digital growth.

Our focus

The Working Group advances four key areas:

  • Efficient facilities: Building, cooling, and water performance
  • Demand-side management: Tariffs, load flexibility, and system planning
  • Grid integration: Virtual power plants and grid services
  • AI for grid optimization: Using AI to improve system efficiency and operations

What we deliver

This is a member-driven initiative designed to produce usable outcomes, including:

  • Policy frameworks and guidance
  • Research and best practices
  • Regulatory engagement and comments
  • Briefings, webinars, and thought leadership

Timeline

Year One (2026): Launch the Working Group, define priorities, and establish ASE’s leadership through research, convenings, and initial policy engagement.

Year Two (2027): Develop an AI-Era Demand-Side Management Framework and expand engagement with states, regulators, and industry.

Year Three (2028): Publish a national Strategic Framework and support implementation across the energy system.

Leadership Circle

The Leadership Circle serves as the initiative’s strategic advisory group, helping shape priorities, research, and policy direction.

Members gain early insight into emerging issues and a direct role in influencing how efficiency is integrated into AI-era energy planning.

Join the Working Group

ASE invites utilities, hyperscalers, manufacturers, grid operators, and partners to join as founding members. Together, we can ensure energy efficiency is a core solution for managing AI-driven demand, strengthening the grid, and supporting sustainable growth.
