Statement on Energy Tax Provisions of Bailout Bill By Alliance to Save Energy Government Relations Director Brad Penney

Release Date: Friday, October 3, 2008

“The 110th Congress has finally kept its promise to the American people by approving the energy efficiency and renewable energy tax incentives contained in the financial rescue plan approved today by the House of Representatives. It would have been unthinkable for the Congress to leave town for the elections having approved this massive rescue plan while ignoring the needs of beleaguered American consumers on Main Street who face spiraling energy costs and of the struggling U.S. economy that needs job-creating new investments in clean energy technologies.

“After the energy efficiency tax incentives were dropped out of last year’s energy bill at the very last minute, it is fitting that one of the very last acts of the 110th Congress is to extend the commercial tax incentives and reinstate the consumer tax credits. Just a few days ago, these incentives appeared to be dead for the rest of the year. But, in Washington, ‘It’s not over ‘til it's over,’ in the words of Yogi Berra; and at the 11th hour bipartisan cooperation and good sense prevailed.”
