Obama Remarks at Alliance Associate Cree Emphasize Power of Energy Efficiency to Create Jobs, Keep America Competitive

Release Date: Monday, June 13, 2011

Washington, D.C., June 13, 2011 – “By choosing Alliance to Save Energy Associate Cree – a prominent manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting – as the venue for his jobs speech today, President Obama once again emphasized the importance of energy efficiency in fueling our nation’s economic recovery and training U.S. workers for high-skilled jobs,” commented Alliance President Kateri Callahan.

“The president highlighted energy efficiency as a consensus strategy for educating American students for jobs in the ‘STEM’ fields – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – for creating jobs in the hard-hit construction industry and for keeping America competitive with China and India,” Callahan noted.

Energy Efficiency Bill S.1000

Callahan pointed out that a major energy-efficiency bill (S. 1000) recently introduced by Alliance Honorary Board Chair Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) would help bring fulfill those goals by deploying energy efficiency widely across the nation’s homes, businesses, manufacturing facilities and government facilities.

“The Shaheen-Portman bill is a prime example of the bipartisan, sound public policy that is critically needed to put the nation back to work and on the road to full economic recovery,” said Callahan. “The bill will do exactly what the president called for today, starting with its potential to create many of the much-needed ‘jobs of the future.’ It also answers the president’s call to keep America at the forefront of technological advancement while lowering energy bills for consumers and businesses.”

Leading a Clean Energy Revolution

Callahan congratulated Alliance member Cree for the high praise it received from the president, who declared that the company is leading what he called the “clean energy revolution.” She noted that Alliance Associate Intel also had a presence at today’s event.

Finally, she remarked that the president’s speech at a leading maker of energy-saving LED lighting products underscored the huge energy and money savings that the nation will begin enjoying in January, when new energy-efficient lighting standards start taking effect.
