Energy Efficiency is Key to Solving Nation’s Immediate, Long-Term Natural Gas Crisis, Says Alliance to Save Energy

Release Date: Wednesday, July 9, 2003

The Alliance to Save Energy commended the Department of Energy’s just-announced public awareness campaign promoting the need for smart energy behavior and enhanced energy efficiency in response to the current natural gas crunch.

“It is gratifying to hear that Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham will be traveling the country to deliver a strong energy efficiency message to the American people,” said Alliance Acting Co-President Mark Hopkins. “We ask the country to respond with enthusiasm.

“The Alliance encourages DOE to build on this new campaign to capture immediate energy savings by incorporating strong national energy-efficiency policies as part of our long-term energy strategy. Energy efficiency is the quickest, cheapest, cleanest way to increase natural gas and other energy supplies. It must be the foundation of our nation’s energy policy,” Hopkins said.

“While we may be running short of natural gas this summer and in the coming winter heating season, we will virtually never run out of energy efficiency. It is our nation’s inexhaustible domestic energy supply.”
