In the Residential market, the availability of smart meters is growing daily. Many utilities are testing a variety of dynamic pricing structures to learn what works best. But what can we learn from the largest dynamic pricing programs that have already been established, sometimes for many years? This Brown Bag will showcase the largest dynamic pricing programs in the country, with one example presented for each of the following types: Time Of Use (TOU), Critical Peak Pricing (CPP), Variable Peak Pricing (VPP), Peak Time Rebates (PTR), and Real Time Pricing (RTP).

During this Brown Bag session you will gain a solid understanding of the various dynamic pricing options that are available, and lessons learned from the field on what works where and why.

Speakers will answer important questions such as:

  • How is your dynamic pricing option structured?
  • How long has it been offered, and who is eligible?
  • How many participants are on it now?
  • What impacts have been observed for participants and/or the utility?
  • What are your best 'lessons learned' from implementation?
  • What was the need/motivation for this dynamic pricing option?
  • Are you part of an open wholesale electric market (ISO/RTO)?
  • Is there competition for your residential retail customers?
  • How do these open markets, or lack of them, affect your dynamic pricing offerings?
  • How do/will smart meters impact them?

Speakers:

Charles Meissner is currently Manager of Pricing for Arizona Public Service.  He has over 25 years experience in the energy industry in the areas of pricing, resource planning, and financial analysis.

Shannon Monroe is a Program Advisor in the Demand Response Team at San Diego Gas and Electric.  She recently moved over into the Demand Response Team after working in the residential and commercial energy efficiency teams.  She is here today with us to talk about SDG&E’s Peak Time Rebate Program.

David manages the two largest residential hourly pricing programs in the nation for ComEd and Ameren Illinois and provides call center design/supervision and Salesforce administration for multiple programs across CNT Energy.

Susan Norris has been working in the utility industry for over 22 years managing both residential and non-residential programs for utilities across the country.  She is currently a senior manager in Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Customer Pricing Products group focused on delivering customer-centric web tools and rate plans that include Peak Day Pricing, Time of Use, and SmartRate™.  Her focus is on helping all customers be aware of their rate plan options and the connection between their rate plan, their energy behavior and their bill.

Moderator:

Mary Klos began her career in the electric and gas utility industry in 1980, working for Wisconsin Public Service Corporation on rates, system planning and the development of energy efficiency and demand response programs.  She currently works as an independent consultant, focusing on economic analysis and impact evaluation, particularly when 'big data' is involved.
