In this Energy and Environment Breakfast, ICF International welcomes energy experts from the World Bank and the Office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis. Discussion topics will include hot-button greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions issues and key questions, such as:
- Will we be able to keep the rise in global temperatures to a reasonable level and avoid some—if not all—of its predicted impacts?
- What will it really take to turn this situation around—and is there the political will to do it?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) warnings about GHG emissions have become more pointed:
- Unless significant steps are taken to slow, stabilize, and reverse gas emissions into the atmosphere, we'll be living in a substantially warmer world later this century—with highly negative consequences.
- Lower oil prices encourage even greater sales of petroleum-based vehicles worldwide.
- Development of coal plants is not appreciably slowing down, especially in developing countries.
- The new Congress is inclined to roll back the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Power Plan and other regulations
But there's hope: new carbon capture technologies, higher fuel efficiency standards, GHG stabilization in Europe, the recent U.S.-China GHG agreement, and the upcoming climate meeting in Paris.
