Student Energy Audit Training and Summer Shut Down Campaign

The Alliance to Save Energy with the support of the District Department of the Environment, will offer Student Energy Audit Training to students in secondary schools in the District of Columbia. Student Energy Audit Training (SEAT) gives students first-hand experience analyzing how energy is used at their school.  Students will learn about many aspects of energy efficiency and energy auditing and will have a chance to conduct real audits of select areas in their school. This will promote student learning about energy efficiency, and make theories learned in science class more tangible for students. Students will have a specific focus on reducing energy use in schools over the summer break.

SEAT is an all-day, hands-on workshop that involves an exciting, interactive presentation and a set of activities that give teachers and students the tools to turn a selected audit area of their school into an energy-efficiency “laboratory.”  Schools and districts that have implemented the energy-saving changes recommended by SEAT students have been known to save thousands of dollars in energy costs.

Summer Shut Down
The SEAT program in the DC Schools in 2011 will feature a Summer Shut Down—preparing the school community for the shut down, completing a walk-through with the custodian, and analyzing the results when they return to school in September.  This will give the trained students a focus for their initiative, will result in actual energy savings, and will culminate in a meeting in September during which SEAT students will be recognized for their energy savings.

Learning about and practicing energy efficiency means everyone wins!
SEAT is an 8-hour course available for middle schools and high schools. The Alliance to Save Energy will provide the trainer, the toolkit, and the workbooks for students. Up to 30 students can attend the workshop, then go back to their classrooms to share their skills and knowledge with their classmates. Seat trainers will consult on a monthly basis with the students and teachers to help them organize an energy squad at their school, set and achieve savings goals, compile an audit report and presentation of results.
