On Oct. 1, 2012, the first international SEAD Global Efficiency Medals will be awarded to the most energy-efficient flat-panel TVs. SEAD stands for the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment initiative, which is an international initiative that engages governments and the private sector to accelerate market transformation of energy-efficient equipment and appliances.

The awards are distributed across four regions of the world to recognize four categories of TVs: small-size TVs, medium-size TVs, large-size TVs, and emerging technology TVs. In addition to regional awards in the Australian, European, Indian and North American markets, one international winner will be awarded in each category. This winner-takes-all competition aims to spur innovation among manufacturers and guide early-adopter consumers who want to buy top-performing products. The SEAD awards complement existing efficiency programs, such as Energy Star, Energy Star Most Efficient, and TopTen.
