Statement by Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan

Washington, D.C., September 28, 2011 – “The Alliance to Save Energy applauds the U.S. Department of Energy’s commitment to focus on many of our organization’s long-term priorities.  Since our inception, we have known that energy efficiency is America’s most abundant energy resource, and one with a longstanding history of being the quickest, cheapest and cleanest way to extend our nation’s energy supplies.

“As indicated in the Alliance-supported Build Energy Efficiency Campaign, major strides can be made when efficiency is incorporated throughout the economy.  

“With the six new priorities outlined in the first-ever Quadrennial Technology Review, energy efficiency is a winner.  The pivot in agency focus from longer-to shorter-term impacts is a positive step. Increasing energy efficiency in the building and industrial sectors, which account for nearly 70% of US energy use, is right on target.

“Improved vehicle efficiency and electrifying the light-duty vehicle fleet will also help consumers enjoy the benefits of saving energy and money.  As the report itself says, ‘increasing vehicle efficiency is the most effective near-to-mid-term strategy for reducing oil consumption in the transportation sector.’ 

“Consumers will also benefit from the continuing commitment to modernizing the electric grid - a way to increase electricity reliability and decrease energy costs.

“This balanced approach is needed.”
