In this Energy and Environment Breakfast, ICF International welcomes one of the top U.S. utilities and one of its leading regulatory thinkers for a discussion on the utility of the future.

Much discussion has surrounded distributed energy resources such as rooftop solar, storage, and demand side management (DSM). Some regions are considering the best ways to reform the distribution system, perhaps by turning its operation over to a nonprofit entity—for example, a regional transmission organization (RTO) at the distribution level—and allowing third parties to use the system to offer an innovative set of energy services to customers.

These considerations raise practical questions, including:

  • How much of this transition can or should take place—and how soon? How might this vary by region or utility?
  • What is the best way to organize the power sector to meet customer needs, while enabling utility participation and a transition to a new paradigm?
  • Will these approaches really make power supplies more reliable, resilient, cost-effective, and clean?

Speakers:

  • Garry Brown, Former Chair and Commissioner, New York Public Service Commission
  • Mark Webb, Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Risk Officer, Dominion
