Tell Congress to Incentivize Energy-Efficient Choices

If you have ever claimed a tax credit for an energy-efficient purchase or upgrade in your home, chances are you were disappointed to learn just how little was offered for making the better choice.

The Section 25C tax credit is intended to reward homeowners who buy efficient products, such as the installation of energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment, water heating, insulation, windows, and doors. These purchases can have high upfront costs, but more than pay for themselves through decreased energy bills and reduced emissions. However, the maximum amount a taxpayer can claim in their lifetime under 25C is $500. That incentive hasn’t been updated in years, and it is simply too low to encourage investment in the efficient option. Send a letter to your representatives today asking them to invest in making households more energy-efficient by reforming the long out-of-date homeowner efficiency tax credit.
