As summer officially begins with a fierce heat wave over much of the country, the Alliance to Save Energy provides energy efficiency tips that can lower home energy bills even as the temperature soars outside.

Washington, D.C. released its first comprehensive sustainability plan, "A Vision for a Sustainable D.C.," in April 2012. D.C. stepped ahead of the curve first in 2006 with the Green Building Act which required all buildings built in the district to be LEED certified; then in 2008, D.C. passed both the Clean and Affordable Energy Act (CAEA) which requires benchmarking for all commercial buildings, and the 2008 D.C. Construction Codes which made D.C.’s building codes one of the most advanced green codes in the country by creating a standard requiring building to be 20% more efficient than previous city codes.

Buildings use huge amounts of energy and are responsible for an estimated 30% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. This report details how five U.S. cities – New York, Washington, San Francisco, and Austin – passed local laws and ordinances that promote energy efficiency and improve quality of life for their residents.

Buildings – which require huge amounts of energy to power their operations – are responsible for an estimated 30% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. And buildings in dense metropolitan areas account for a large portion of those GHG emissions due to the way city dwellers live, work and travel.
