UK’s Green Deal Passes: New Consumer Help for Home Efficiency Upgrades

The Green Deal, a program to finance efficiency upgrades in the United Kingdom, recently passed in Parliament. It aims to help consumers cope with rising energy costs and help meet the country’s greenhouse gas reduction commitments.

On Oct. 18 2011, the Energy Act 2011 became law in the United Kingdom. The law establishes a new program called the Green Deal, which is designed to assist British consumers in financing energy efficiency upgrades to their homes. Through such upgrades, the Green Deal aims to help consumers cope with rising energy costs and help the United Kingdom meet its greenhouse gas reduction commitments.

Alliance to Save Energy advises U.S. consumers to adopt energy efficiency measures to “insulate” their pocketbooks as well as their homes this winter. 

 Washington, D.C., October 13, 2011 – As the Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts rising heating costs this winter for households using natural gas, propane and heating oil, the Alliance to Save Energy advises U.S. consumers to adopt energy efficiency measures to “insulate” their pocketbooks as well as their homes this winter. Prices for households heating with electricity should be about the same as last winter, according to EIA’s Winter Fuels Outlook.

The Alliance and P&G are teaming up to get the word out about cold-water washing. Their message: Switch to cold water to get clothes just as clean while using less energy and money.

At the Clinton Global Initiative on Sept. 21, 2011, Proctor & Gamble (P&G) and the Alliance to Save Energy announced that they are teaming up to get the word out about cold-water washing.

Their message: Heating water to do laundry is one of the largest users of energy in a typical home. So, switch to washing in cold water – it gets clothes just as clean as hot water, while using less energy and money.
