According to AAA, regular unleaded gas has hit $3.61 a gallon nationally, a jump of 23 cents since a month ago and 42 cents in the last year. The Alliance has calculated that the average U.S. household will spend about $3,325 to power its vehicles this year, but simple fuel efficiency measures can cut those costs significantly. 

An unseasonable spike in gasoline prices is putting a premium on fuel-efficiency for cost-conscious drivers, says the Alliance to Save Energy. According to AAA, regular unleaded gas has hit $3.61 a gallon nationally, a jump of 23 cents since a month ago and 42 cents in the last year.

“We cannot control the many factors that cause oil and gasoline prices to fluctuate,” said Alliance President Kateri Callahan, “but we can minimize our own fuel use with proper vehicle maintenance and smart driving habits.”

A new Alliance-P&G partnership is set to promote energy savings and CO2 reductions from change in consumers' laundry habits.

Partnership to Promote Energy Savings and CO2 Reductions from Change in Laundry Habits

The Procter & Gamble Company today announced a strategic partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy to publicize the environmental and energy savings benefits of washing laundry in cold water.

Through this agreement, the Alliance will work with P&G’s natural resource education initiative, Future Friendly, to provide consumers with the information they need to convert from hot/warm water washing habits to cold water washing.

STEP-UP: Local Energy Program Helps Maryland Save

Over 200 Maryland neighbors got home energy assessments in 2011 through the Small Town Energy Program for University Park (STEP-UP). The program, a $1.42 million grant from the Department of Energy, helps participants save energy and money in their homes.

A small town in Maryland is offering a model for successful energy-saving programs around the country. Over 200 neighbors in the Prince George’s County Town of University Park signed up for home energy assessments last year through the Small Town Energy Program for University Park (STEP-UP), a $1.42 million, three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Better Buildings Neighborhood Program.

National Mall’s Historic Lamps Upgrade to Energy-Efficient LEDs

Dignitaries including Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar just flipped the switch on a new way the National Mall will be lit at night: with energy-efficient LEDs.

 

On a chilly afternoon Jan. 30, a large group gathered on the National Mall to watch a resplendent sunset behind the Washington Monument. As darkness gathered, a coterie of dignitaries including Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar flipped the switch on a new way the monumental national park, which attracts over 24 million visitors a year, will be lit at night. Finally dark, visitors saw 173 Olmstead lamps, which date back to the Great Depression, shine with the power of new and more energy-efficient LED lights.
