Energy efficiency saves money for individuals and communities alike. The Alliance offers a variety of no-cost and low-cost money and energy saving tips to fit individual pocketbooks, including suggestions for slashing your home electricity bill and preventing blackouts, lowering operating costs in your office and cutting gas costs.

Energy-Efficient Subway Systems of the World

While subway systems are providing a great benefit to communities, they require a great deal of energy to operate. To honor the London Underground's 150th anniversary, we’ve compiled a list of some of the world's most energy-efficient subway systems.

According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), public transportation avoids the use of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually in the United States. While public transportation can refer to a variety of modes, APTA attributes access to bus and rail lines with reducing U.S. driving by 4,400 miles, or approximately 223 gallons of gasoline per household, annually. Subway systems are providing a great benefit to communities, but they still require a great deal of energy to operate.

When you get a cut or scrape, you use a band aid to stop the bleeding. But what if your house was bleeding and you didn’t know it? Heat Bleed is the result of energy loss in homes caused by such factors as outdated HVAC systems,old appliances, and non-energy efficient windows and doors. However, the main cause of Heat Bleed is inadequate insulation and air leakage, and it not only affects older homes, but it affects newer homes as well.

On June 21, 2012, Philadelphia’s City Council unanimously passed an energy and water benchmarking and disclosure ordinance. The city joins a select group of cities, including Washington, D.C., New York City, Seattle, Austin, and San Francisco, that have all passed similar benchmarking and disclosure laws in recent years.

2012 Wrap-Up: The Alliance to Save Energy's Year in Review

The year 2012 was a milestone for us at the Alliance to Save Energy: We celebrated 35 years of advancing energy efficiency, and laid solid groundwork for another 35 years. Throughout the the year, we charged forward with consumer outreach, on-the-ground projects, and political advocacy to inject “using less, doing more” into people’s daily lives. These are our proudest moments of 2012.

The year 2012 was a milestone for us at the Alliance to Save Energy: We celebrated 35 years of advancing energy efficiency, and laid solid groundwork for another 35 years. Alliance President Kateri Callahan rang in the New Year – and new lighting efficiency standards – by appearing with New York City’s LED-lit Times Square Ball.

Louisiana Becomes the Third State in the Southeast to Adopt Statewide Energy Efficiency Rules

Last week, the Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC) announced the passage of a landmark energy efficiency rule that could mean big savings for ratepayers and small businesses statewide. This standard – one of the first of its kind in the Southeast – was adopted following three years of dialogue spearheaded by the Alliance for Affordable Energy, the Sierra Club, and the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA).
