Sound policy can break down barriers to energy efficiency at the local, state, regional and national levels. The Alliance promotes energy efficiency policies that are meaningful, politically viable and implementable.

Critical to the Solution

Barriers to energy efficiency — including the need for upfront capital investment, lack of consumer awareness and highly-subsidized prices for fossil fuels — often prevent even the "low-hanging fruit" from being picked. Fortunately, sound energy policy can break through these barriers and transform market conditions to create an energy-efficient nation.

Realizing energy efficiency's greatest potential is key component of the Alliance's mission and effective policy is a critical part of the solution. To achieve this goal, the Alliance Policy Team, which includes a research group and a government relations group, focuses on three main tasks:

  • Policy formulation and analysis;
  • Policy advocacy; and
  • Education of policymakers, consumers and the media.

The Alliance to Save Energy today urged members of  the U.S. House of Representatives to adopt an energy package that will save American consumers money while also improving our environment and increasing our nation’s energy security.

Washington, D.C., December 5, 2007 – The Alliance to Save Energy today urged the U.S. House of Representatives to pass its energy bill that emphasizes energy efficiency by raising vehicle fuel economy standards and encouraging consumers to purchase plug-in hybrid vehicles; extending valuable federal income tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements; phasing out inefficient lighting products; and encouraging development of zero-emission commercial buildings.

Unless Congress acts quickly to extend the tax credits worth up to $500 per household, these federal incentives for homeowners to increase their homes’ energy efficiency will expire on December 31.

Not only are the standards announced today little changed from the original levels set by Congress twenty years ago, but also 99% of natural gas furnaces currently sold already meet the new minimum efficiency level.

National Governors Association’s (NGA) “Securing a Clean Energy Future” initiative raises public awareness about the importance of a clean energy future, identifies new opportunities for states to save energy, disseminates best practices, and explores state-industry partnerships to advance the initiative’s policy goals.

Washington, D.C., September 12, 2007 – The Alliance to Save Energy today lauded the National Governors Association’s (NGA) “Securing a Clean Energy Future” initiative and urged governors to use energy efficiency as the cornerstone for achieving the ambitious goals of the initiative.

Those goals include raising public awareness about the importance of a clean energy future, identifying new opportunities for states to save energy, disseminating best practices, and exploring state-industry partnerships to advance the initiative’s policy goals.
