Sound policy can break down barriers to energy efficiency at the local, state, regional and national levels. The Alliance promotes energy efficiency policies that are meaningful, politically viable and implementable.

Critical to the Solution

Barriers to energy efficiency — including the need for upfront capital investment, lack of consumer awareness and highly-subsidized prices for fossil fuels — often prevent even the "low-hanging fruit" from being picked. Fortunately, sound energy policy can break through these barriers and transform market conditions to create an energy-efficient nation.

Realizing energy efficiency's greatest potential is key component of the Alliance's mission and effective policy is a critical part of the solution. To achieve this goal, the Alliance Policy Team, which includes a research group and a government relations group, focuses on three main tasks:

  • Policy formulation and analysis;
  • Policy advocacy; and
  • Education of policymakers, consumers and the media.

Amendment to Weaken Energy-Efficient Lighting Standards Passes House

The light bulb standards are under attack by an amendment that would pull funding for their enforcement and implementation. However, the Alliance is fighting to protect the standards, which already are giving Americans more ways to light their homes and lower their electric bills.

The light bulb standards, which were enacted in 2007 and require incandescent light bulbs to be roughly 30% more efficient starting in 2012, are under attack. A recent amendment to a related appropriations bill would pull funding for enforcement and implementation of the standards.  However, the Alliance is fighting to protect the standards, which already are giving Americans more ways to light their homes and lower their electric bills.

“This wrong-headed amendment would encourage and condone an illegal, underground black market for manufacturers of energy-wasting products that may cost consumers little up front but would put a strain on their wallets in the long term and drain U.S. energy resources and jobs,” said Alliance President Kateri Callahan.
