Lighting likely accounts for 12% of your home’s energy use – but don’t worry. Improving lighting is a fast, simple way to reduce energy bills. And with new lighting standards, you have more money-saving options than ever before.

New Lighting Standards

Since new lighting standards began in January 2012, light bulbs are almost 30% more efficient than the old-style incandescent bulbs. That means families who change at least 15 of their bulbs could save between $50 and more than $100 per year in electricity costs.

Lighting accounts for approximately 12% of the average household’s energy bill and energy-efficient options help you save money.  Families can save between $50 and more than $100 a year by just changing their bulbs. Plus, there are more than 4 billion screw-based sockets in the U.S., which means you can save more than $10 billion per year. Traditional incandescents waste energy and money by using 90% of electricity to produce heat instead of light. Yet, with numerous energy-efficient bulb options, you can make smart lighting choices.

Letter from the President's Desk: Energy Efficiency Policy Events

Even Washington’s recent heat wave could not slow down energy efficiency work on Capitol Hill. Efficiency advocates – and unfortunately, others seeking to roll back our progress – have both been industrious in recent weeks.

Dear Friends,

Even Washington’s recent heat wave could not slow down energy efficiency work on Capitol Hill. Efficiency advocates – and unfortunately, others seeking to roll back our progress – have both been industrious in recent weeks. Alliance staff are hard at work to advocate sensible decisions and bring you opportunities to hear from and provide input to the decision makers. In this note, I discuss some of the recent Capitol Hill “happenings” and opportunities where we would like you to engage with us.

Amendment to Weaken Energy-Efficient Lighting Standards Passes House

The light bulb standards are under attack by an amendment that would pull funding for their enforcement and implementation. However, the Alliance is fighting to protect the standards, which already are giving Americans more ways to light their homes and lower their electric bills.

The light bulb standards, which were enacted in 2007 and require incandescent light bulbs to be roughly 30% more efficient starting in 2012, are under attack. A recent amendment to a related appropriations bill would pull funding for enforcement and implementation of the standards.  However, the Alliance is fighting to protect the standards, which already are giving Americans more ways to light their homes and lower their electric bills.
