Lighting likely accounts for 12% of your home’s energy use – but don’t worry. Improving lighting is a fast, simple way to reduce energy bills. And with new lighting standards, you have more money-saving options than ever before.

New Lighting Standards

Since new lighting standards began in January 2012, light bulbs are almost 30% more efficient than the old-style incandescent bulbs. That means families who change at least 15 of their bulbs could save between $50 and more than $100 per year in electricity costs.

What Is Electrical Energy?

Plugging in an electrical cord
August 11, 2008

In this lesson students learn about electrical energy, and the difference between common items that use electricity, and those that do not. In understanding how and when energy is used, students gain awareness of ways to save energy.

Overview

This is an introductory lesson for students who have little knowledge about electricity. The lesson identifies common items that use electrical energy. Following this lesson, young students will be more aware of when they are engaged in an activity that uses electricity.

Home Star Inches Closer to Finish Line

On April 15, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the HOME STAR Energy Retrofits Act, which would provide rebates to homeowners who retrofit their homes with energy-efficient equipment and materials.

Today, legislation to empower cash-strapped Americans to make their homes more energy-efficient passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Introduced by Alliance Honorary Vice-Chair Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Rep. Vern Ehlers (R-Mich.) and Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.), the HOME STAR Energy Retrofits Act would provide rebates to homeowners who retrofit their homes with energy-efficient equipment and materials, such as insulation and efficient windows.

Home Star Bill Introduced in the House

Today, a bipartisan group of representatives including Alliance Honorary Vice-Chair Ed Markey introduced the much-talked-about HOME STAR legislation to the House of Representatives. Given HOME STAR's potential for job creation and energy efficiency gains, the Alliance has worked hard to usher the bill to this next critical phase.

After weeks of hearings and debate, the bipartisan HOME STAR legislation was introduced today in the House of Representatives by Alliance Honorary Vice-Chair Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Rep. Vern Ehlers (R-Mich.) and Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.).

With the construction industry stuck at 25 percent unemployment and many Americans struggling to make ends meet, HOME STAR would empower cash-strapped Americans to make their homes more energy-efficient.

Alliance Associates Help Haiti

A few weeks ago, we asked our Associates to tell us how they had contributed to the relief efforts in Haiti. We heard back from a number of you, and would like to spread the word about your good deeds.

The Alliance would like to recognize the following Associates for helping the relief effort in Haiti. These organizations have contributed supplies, equipment, services and financial support.
