Energy efficiency provides an international solution to some of today's greatest challenges.

Cost-Effective Solutions to Global Issues

New market drivers are rapidly expanding the market for energy-efficient goods and services in developing and transitional countries. Though a number of barriers still remain, the energy efficiency market in developing and transitional countries is more robust and vibrant than it was when the Alliance was founded in 1977.

Energy efficiency provides the international community with powerful, cost-effective means to a sustainable future. Energy efficiency can reduce fuel costs, contribute to job growth and improve the lives of consumers worldwide, all while reducing environmental damage.

The Alliance works to achieve energy efficiency throughout the world through programs like Watergy, as well as sister organizations like the European Alliance to Save Energy and the Australian Alliance to Save Energy.

The Alliance has organized the Workshop on Policies that Promote Energy Efficiency in Transport on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group to take place on March 24 and 25 at the APEC Secretariat offices in Singapore.

The Alliance has organized the Workshop on Policies that Promote Energy Efficiency in Transport on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group to take place on March 24 and 25 at the APEC Secretariat offices in Singapore. At its core is an Alliance report produced for APEC which surveyed many of the policies that promote energy-efficient transportation systems in APEC economies.

Saving Water in South African Schools

Recently, the Alliance, along with the Coca-Cola Foundation and USAID, completed work on the Water for Schools program in South Africa, which repaired water systems and improved water sanitation in seven South African primary schools and their communities.

January 2010 – A leaky faucet might seem like a pretty harmless thing. On a large scale, however, it can translate into water shortages and related sanitary conditions for an entire community, affecting families, neighborhoods, businesses – and schools.

A Look Ahead to 2009

There's no doubt about it: energy efficiency is a hot topic, and ready for deployment. To meet this opportunity head-on the Alliance has compiled an impressive to-do list for 2009. Here are a few of the programmatic highlights we'll be pursuing in the coming year. We welcome your involvement, so please get in touch if any of these activities are compatible with the mission of your organization or business.

"The stars are aligned for energy efficiency." President Kateri Callahan could not have said it better in her interview with Time magazine. Indeed, it is an exciting time for energy efficiency advocates everywhere, and we at the Alliance are anticipating a busy and fulfilling year. Here is are just a few of the projects on our radar. Please contact us if any of these pique your interest; we are always eager to collaborate with our esteemed Associates.

The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) Tackles Energy Poverty

Poverty alleviation. Healthcare. Economic development. Though less likely to be associated with the topic of energy than the buzzwords "climate change" and "energy security", these issues are ultimately affected by energy access - or lack thereof - in many developing countries. The Alliance to Save Energy is the North American Secretariat of the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), an organization implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy through development projects worldwide to bring rural and urban communities out of energy poverty.

The energy-savvy are well-versed on the direct positive impacts of energy efficiency and renewable energy in the arenas of climate change and energy security. However, clean and reliable energy access has far-reaching implications in many areas not readily associated with energy, including poverty alleviation, healthcare, and economic development. Thus, the impact of energy efficiency/renewable energy cannot simply be measured in emissions reductions, but must also be evaluated through the lens of economic development and global health.

Alliance President Kateri Callahan reports on the international panel she moderated at the World Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by the International Women’s Forum.

This morning I had the great honor of moderating an international panel at the World Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by the International Women’s Forum. Nearly 1,000 women from five continents gathered to share innovative ideas and solutions to the challenges posed by our ever-expanding world population, and the shrinking supply of resources on which it relies.

Many Hands, Light Work: Alliance's Merrilee Harrigan in Tijuana, Mexico

This past summer Alliance Vice President of Education Merrilee Harrigan traveled to Tijuana, Mexico for an out-of-the-ordinary vacation. Far from the clichés of margaritas and siestas, Merrilee was one of four chaperones to accompany a group of 13 American youths (including her 17-year old son, Ian MacMillan) who rolled up their sleeves and got to work building houses for disadvantaged community members with the volunteer program Esperanza International.

Pounds Sterling for Pounds Carbon: The U.K. Proposes New Energy Package

Like us, U.K. citizens are feeling the pinch of high energy prices set against an increasingly unstable world market. But their government has proposed a lock-stock-and-two-smoking-barrels energy package that rivals anything put together by their contemporaries across the Atlantic.
