Energy efficiency provides an international solution to some of today's greatest challenges.

Cost-Effective Solutions to Global Issues

New market drivers are rapidly expanding the market for energy-efficient goods and services in developing and transitional countries. Though a number of barriers still remain, the energy efficiency market in developing and transitional countries is more robust and vibrant than it was when the Alliance was founded in 1977.

Energy efficiency provides the international community with powerful, cost-effective means to a sustainable future. Energy efficiency can reduce fuel costs, contribute to job growth and improve the lives of consumers worldwide, all while reducing environmental damage.

The Alliance works to achieve energy efficiency throughout the world through programs like Watergy, as well as sister organizations like the European Alliance to Save Energy and the Australian Alliance to Save Energy.

Image
September 1, 2009

This survey explores the range of policies and programs available to public sector decision makers to maximize the efficiency of the transportation sector in their jurisdictions. Since countless volumes have been written on these topics, it is the intent of this survey to distill the large amount of information into concise summaries that provide APEC policymakers and decision makers with an understanding of the range of proven options for improving transport efficiency. The authors summarize about 50 examples2 of policies and programs undertaken by APEC economies to improve transportation energy efficiency.

Saving Energy, Saving Water, Making History

Built some 2,500 years ago on a seaside cliff in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, Thiru Koneswaran is the country’s oldest Hindu temples. And though it remains an active place of worship, the temple had for years suffered chronic water shortages that greatly hampered its daily functions. Thanks to a Watergy-trained local engineer, however, the temple and surrounding town are today saving precious water and energy.

Razed to the ground by the Portuguese in 1624, it has remained an active place of worship despite its disrepair, and is today in the process of a slow but steady reconstruction.

Alliance, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Tackle Climate Change in Lake Victoria Basin

Water, energy and climate change are pivotal issues in a new project explicitly titled “Climate Change Vulnerability and Infrastructure Investment Assessment and Analysis for Small Scale Water Utilities in the Lake Victoria Basin.” With funding from UN Habitat’s Water and Sanitation Trust Fund, the Alliance will partner with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Stockholm Environment Institute-US Center (SEI-US) and Climate XL to carry out the project, which is scheduled to last 18 months and encompass water utilities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Sustainable Design in India

The Alliance has been working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on projects under the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate’s Buildings and Appliances Task Force (APP-BATF). One of the Task Force’s goals is to promote high-performance buildings through outreach and training in the use of building simulation tools, and through the promotion of technologies and best practices for net-zero energy buildings, building performance measurement and benchmarking and market transformation.
