Energy efficiency provides an international solution to some of today's greatest challenges.

Cost-Effective Solutions to Global Issues

New market drivers are rapidly expanding the market for energy-efficient goods and services in developing and transitional countries. Though a number of barriers still remain, the energy efficiency market in developing and transitional countries is more robust and vibrant than it was when the Alliance was founded in 1977.

Energy efficiency provides the international community with powerful, cost-effective means to a sustainable future. Energy efficiency can reduce fuel costs, contribute to job growth and improve the lives of consumers worldwide, all while reducing environmental damage.

The Alliance works to achieve energy efficiency throughout the world through programs like Watergy, as well as sister organizations like the European Alliance to Save Energy and the Australian Alliance to Save Energy.

India Leaps the Hurdles of an Energy Building Code

On the fast track to high electricity use in the next decade, India is mitigating an energy crisis by pursuing energy efficiency and conservation programs.

On the fast track to high electricity use in the next decade, India is mitigating an energy crisis by pursuing energy efficiency and conservation programs. One of these programs is the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), which was developed in 2007 to curb energy use in buildings. The ECBC will soon become mandatory, and the Alliance is helping with its implementation.

Clean Energy Ministerial Introduces Global Superior Energy Performance

There's a Map for That: National Geographic Introduces the Global Action Atlas

Can you find energy efficiency on the map? National Geographic can. The media giant's new Global Action Atlas - an international and interactive network of causes and projects - features a number of energy efficiency projects, including two spearheaded by the Alliance: Watergy and Green Schools.

May 19, 2010 – Since its inception 112 years ago, National Geographic has become more than the trademark yellow-trimmed magazine filled with compelling stories and images from around the globe. It has evolved into a cable television channel, and a website. And now that website has spawned sub-sites that further promote National Geographic's mission: to inspire people to care about the planet.

The Alliance to Save Energy has selected Mexico’s National Housing Commission (CONAVI) and National Fund for Housing (INFONAVIT) to share one of its “Stars of Energy Efficiency” awards for their exemplary work in promoting energy efficiency in their low-income housing programs.

Mexico City, August 17, 2009 – Each year the Washington, D.C.-based Alliance to Save Energy, a nonprofit organization that promotes energy efficiency worldwide, selects an international organization to receive one of its “Stars of Energy Efficiency” awards. This year, that honor is being shared by Mexico’s National Housing Commission (CONAVI) and National Fund for Housing (INFONAVIT) for their exemplary work in promoting energy efficiency in their low-income housing programs.

Watergy

Watergy

It takes a lot of energy to pump and treat water for urban residents and industry – between 2 to 3 percent of the world’s energy consumption, to be exact. As a result, clean water is often inaccessible in energy-poor countries.  Our Watergy program has helped improve water sanitation and delivery services in more than 100 cities worldwide.

Overview:

Watergy efficiency measures reap many rewards, such as immediate improvements in water service, increased water delivery, reduced water and energy consumption, greater revenue for system upgrades and new customer connections.  Moreover, the improvements have rapid rates of return spanning from a few months to three years.

While opportunities for energy efficiency improvements abound throughout all stages of a water supply system, the most promising areas for intervention are  improving the pumping system, managing leaks, automating system operations, and regular monitoring (preferably including metering of end use).

International Program

Globe

The International team provides technical and financing assistance, policy advocacy, and information sharing services to governments, multi-lateral organizations, corporations and consumers worldwide.

Overview:

The International Team builds coalitions with key stakeholders and works with local partners around the world to implement programs that create lasting improvements in energy efficiency. Drawing on the expertise of the Alliance’s U.S.-based staff and its offices in India, Mexico, South Africa, Armenia, and Ukraine, the Alliance has carried out international programs in more than 30 countries and in every key energy sector.

The team assists governments at the national and local levels in policy making by helping to prepare efficiency legislation and strengthening institutional capacity to implement policies and programs; and by documenting best practices, and organizing international exchanges to showcase and share them.

Alliance experts have designed and carried out international projects focusing on energy efficiency in the areas of water supply and treatment, transportation, industrial and commercial energy efficiency, municipal energy efficiency, and municipal financing, and have carried out information campaigns and education programs in numerous countries.

Our work features international exchanges, capacity building, policy making, and best practices. The sectors we focus on include water, transportation, industrial energy efficiency, municipal energy efficiency, and municipal financing.
