Energy use in the information technology sector is increasing rapidly, presenting an opportunity as well as a challenge to the overall growth in energy demand.

Growing Sector Provides Potential

The information and communications technology (ICT) sector accounts for an increasing demand for energy, while also offering promising solutions to the overall increase in energy use.

On the one hand, energy-intensive computing and Internet communications are quickly becoming the fastest growing energy-use sector. According to a 2011 Stanford University/New York Times study, data centers comprised 2 percent of U.S. electricity consumption in 2010 — a 250 percent jump since 2000 — and increasing adoption of home electronics including computers, smartphones, digital cable set-top boxes and video game consoles are driving up domestic energy usage at the same time. However, that same study points out that data center energy consumption growth has grown slower than predicted due to increasing use of cloud computing and desktop virtualization, reducing the need for businesses to maintain their own in-house data centers and allowing them to utilize lower-power computers like thin clients or laptops.

The ICT sector also creates energy-saving opportunities by reducing freight and travel, automating building systems and technologies, optimizing utility distribution, and making smart-grid technologies possible.

Making sure that ICT equipment — from the largest data centers down to your mobile phone — run more efficiently is critically important to managing the world's energy use. But innovative applications of this technology can also drastically reduce the energy use of other sectors.

Social Networking Site Launched for Energy Professionals

A new social networking website, HomeEnergyPros, offers energy efficiency professionals an online space to network, swap ideas and stay tuned to home energy performance news. The HomeEnergyPros website is sponsored by Alliance Associate Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Home Energy Saver” audit tool, in partnership with Home Energy Magazine.

Alliance, Associates Join Consumer-Oriented Smart Grid Coalition

The Alliance recently became an affiliate member of the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative, which researches consumer perspectives relevant to smart grid build-out. Several Alliance Associates also belong to the Collaborative, including Best Buy, Duke Energy, the Gridwise Alliance, Intel, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and OPOWER, as well as the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance.

The Alliance recently became an affiliate member of the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC), which researches consumer perspectives relevant to smart grid build-out. The SGCC also conducts consumer outreach on smart grid issues, and serves as a venue for members to share their research and pertinent best practices.

Ensuring an Energy-Efficient Smart Grid Design

The Alliance joined the SGCC to meet a mutual goal of ensuring that energy efficiency is built into smart grid systems’ design.

OpenADR Specification Poised to Become Smart Grid Standard, Berkeley Lab Researchers Say

Amid increasing demand for energy, those working to transform the existing U.S. electric grid into a smart grid are taking a vested interest in Automated Demand Response technology. That’s where the proposed standard called Open Auto-DR (OpenADR) comes in.

Amid increasing demand for energy, those working to transform the existing U.S. electric grid into a smart grid are taking a vested interest in Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR) technology.

Auto-DR can improve electric grid reliability and reduce electricity costs by preventing costly outages and reducing average electricity prices. However, the Auto-DR technology is not effective in a vacuum or without a standardized information exchange for both price and reliability signals.  That’s where the proposed standard called Open Auto-DR (OpenADR) comes in.

Biden Announces Plan to Drive Home Efficiency

On Nov. 9, Vice President Joe Biden announced a series of measures that could open the home energy efficiency upgrade market to every middle-class American homeowner. The three-part proposal aims to save money and spur employment by confronting major barriers to home energy upgrades, most notably,  lack of upfront capital and homeowner information.

Facebook 'Friends' the Alliance to Advance the Cause of Saving Energy

Facebook and the Alliance are now “friends.” The social networking giant is serious about efficiency and is teaming up with the Alliance to help more people save energy, such as through the likable "Green on Facebook" page.

In Facebook’s explosive six-year history, millions of people around the globe have shared stories, made new connections and strengthened old friendships on the social networking site. But what many users don’t know is that Facebook, which boasts more than 500 million users, also is a pioneer in energy efficiency — and the Alliance’s newest Associate member.

I have very big and exciting news to announce as we close the calendar on Energy Awareness month! The Alliance has put in place a trifecta of initiatives to build global awareness of energy efficiency: we’re launching a brand new consumer website; we’ve established an innovative partnership with Facebook; and we’ve arranged a month-long consumer education “commercial” on CBS’s Times Square Super Screen!

Yesterday, we launched LivingEfficiently.org, which is designed to serve consumers' record-breaking demand for energy efficiency information. To kick off this exciting new web portal—which will help consumers live cheaper, cleaner and better—we teamed up with NASCAR driver and environmental activist Leilani Münter who was named by Discovery Channel’s Planet Green as America’s #1 “Eco Athlete” this year.

October is National Energy Awareness Month, and I am proud that so many Alliance Associates have joined with us to raise awareness about the benefits of using energy efficiency as our nation's “first fuel.” One of our most notable salutes to Energy Awareness Month is our abiding commitment to the pursuit of federal policies that advance energy efficiency. As we continue our concerted campaign in the current Congress, we also are hard at work preparing to make very significant gains in the new Congress.
