Saving energy in schools and making energy efficiency a lesson for students is fundamental in shaping a new generation of energy efficiency leaders.

Next Generation's Leaders

Nationwide, schools spend $8 billion per year on energy. To lessen the economic blow and influence the next generation of leaders, the Alliance uses a variety of educational programs to reach students.

PowerSave Schools and the PowerSave Campus Program

Through basic changes in operations, maintenance and individual behavior, PowerSave Schools has reduced energy use by 5-15% among participating schools. PowerSave Schools also encourages students to apply the lessons of energy efficiency in their homes and communities.

The PowerSave Campus Program is leading the way toward green careers and campus sustainability by growing the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.Through PowerSave Campus, students save energy on their campuses by conducting educational outreach; infusing energy conservation and efficiency into course curricula; and implementing projects targeting energy use, student purchasing decisions and operational changes.

Because even the youngest members of a household can be stewards for energy efficiency, the Alliance's mischievous Energy Hog teaches kids about ways they, and their parents, can practice energy efficiency at home.

Why is it hotter when I wear black in the summer?

A Hot Sun
June 17, 2004

In this project based lesson plan, developed by a Green Schools teacher, students in grades K-5 learn how different colors absorb/reflect sunlight in unique ways and apply this knowledge to real world problems.

This lesson started when a first grader asked me this question when we were doing a weather unit and it was a hot summer day in Southern California. Many of the best lessons are started by a student or students just being curious and asking questions.

Energy Conservation vs. Energy Efficiency: What's the Difference?

Energy Efficiency means building smarter homes
May 4, 2004

Energy efficiency is a far cry from the energy conservation images and practices of old - of doing with less or doing without, of being uncomfortable or less comfortable.

The OPEC oil embargo and related energy shortages and gas lines in the 1970s…

The President of the United States sitting in a cardigan asking all Americans to turn down their thermostats and industries to run factories at partial capacity…being somewhat less comfortable…

Sacrificing…

These are such graphic images of energy and national security in the American consciousness that they often are the first thoughts that come to mind when the words "energy conservation" are heard.

When kids go back to school this fall, will they see fewer teachers and bigger classes? Will their libraries lack new books? Such scenarios could materialize, further battering already-pinched school budgets, as higher natural gas prices inflate school heating costs.

(Editor’s Note: The Alliance to Save Energy has Green Schools Programs in California Maryland, and Pennsylvania.)

When kids go back to school this fall, will they see fewer teachers and bigger classes? Will their libraries lack new books? Such scenarios could materialize, further battering already-pinched school budgets, as higher natural gas prices inflate school heating costs. Electricity bills could be higher too. Natural gas – the cleanest-burning fossil fuel – powers a growing number of electric power plants.
