Next Generation's Leaders

Nationwide, schools spend $8 billion per year on energy. To lessen the economic blow and influence the next generation of leaders, the Alliance uses a variety of educational programs to reach students.

PowerSave Schools and the PowerSave Campus Program

Through basic changes in operations, maintenance and individual behavior, PowerSave Schools has reduced energy use by 5-15% among participating schools. PowerSave Schools also encourages students to apply the lessons of energy efficiency in their homes and communities.

The PowerSave Campus Program is leading the way toward green careers and campus sustainability by growing the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.Through PowerSave Campus, students save energy on their campuses by conducting educational outreach; infusing energy conservation and efficiency into course curricula; and implementing projects targeting energy use, student purchasing decisions and operational changes.

Because even the youngest members of a household can be stewards for energy efficiency, the Alliance's mischievous Energy Hog teaches kids about ways they, and their parents, can practice energy efficiency at home.

The California Green Schools Program wrapped up its most exciting and successful year yet, with three districts – Hesperia, Murrieta and Temecula – saving over 3.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh’s) of energy, nearly $600,000 in energy costs, and almost 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions.

The California Green Schools Program wrapped up its most exciting and successful year yet, with three districts – Hesperia, Murrieta and Temecula – saving over 3.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh’s) of energy, nearly $600,000 in energy costs, and almost 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions.

This dynamic year saw over 60 schools engaged in numerous and creative energy saving activities despite unprecedented statewide budget cuts, and multiple teacher and staff layoffs.

At a five-day Youth Policy Summit on Energy Efficiency in California, 34 college students from around the country will explore how the state might improve its energy efficiency in vehicles, buildings, and electricity generation to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

July 29, 2009, Sacramento, CA—At a five-day Youth Policy Summit on Energy Efficiency in California, 34 college students from around the country will explore how the state might improve its energy efficiency in vehicles, buildings, and electricity generation to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Participating students will make recommendations to be shared with the state's leading energy policymakers and stakeholders.

This evening, DC Council Members Harry Thomas, Jr. (Ward 5) and Mary Cheh (Ward 3) joined the Alliance to Save Energy and the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) in presenting awards to four District public schools for exemplary energy-efficiency curricula and saving energy and money with energy-efficiency achievements.

Washington, D.C., May 7, 2009 – This evening, DC Council Members Harry Thomas, Jr. (Ward 5) and Mary Cheh (Ward 3) joined the Alliance to Save Energy and the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) in presenting awards to four District public schools for exemplary energy-efficiency curricula and saving energy and money with energy-efficiency achievements. The awards ceremony marked the completion of the first year of the Alliance’s Saving Energy in DC Schools (SEDS) program.

2009 Youth Policy Summit: Energy Efficiency in California

This summer, the Alliance to Save Energy, Keystone Science School, and American Petroleum Institute hosted an Energy Efficiency Youth Policy Summit for colleges students from around the nation.

From August 2-6, 2009, the Alliance to Save Energy partnered with The Keystone Center and the American Petroleum Institute to organize and facilitate an Energy Efficiency Youth Policy Summit on Climate Status Investigations. The Summit convened 33 students from colleges around the nation to focus on the subject of improving energy efficiency in California.
