Next Generation's Leaders

Nationwide, schools spend $8 billion per year on energy. To lessen the economic blow and influence the next generation of leaders, the Alliance uses a variety of educational programs to reach students.

PowerSave Schools and the PowerSave Campus Program

Through basic changes in operations, maintenance and individual behavior, PowerSave Schools has reduced energy use by 5-15% among participating schools. PowerSave Schools also encourages students to apply the lessons of energy efficiency in their homes and communities.

The PowerSave Campus Program is leading the way toward green careers and campus sustainability by growing the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.Through PowerSave Campus, students save energy on their campuses by conducting educational outreach; infusing energy conservation and efficiency into course curricula; and implementing projects targeting energy use, student purchasing decisions and operational changes.

Because even the youngest members of a household can be stewards for energy efficiency, the Alliance's mischievous Energy Hog teaches kids about ways they, and their parents, can practice energy efficiency at home.

EPA Names North Penn School District 2013 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year

The district slashed its energy waste by 35% to date. Over 400 students are engaged in North Penn’s energy efficiency initiatives as part of the PowerSave Schools program run by the Alliance to Save Energy.

Colleen Butterfield is a Program Associate on the Education Team and began working for the PowerSave Campus Program in March 2013.  She serves as the campus lead for UC San Francisco, UC Santa Cruz, Humboldt State University and Chico State University PowerSave Campus teams, training and supervising student interns that implement energy efficiency projects on their campuses. She works out of the Alliance to Save Energy’s Oakland, California office.
 

Campus Conservation Nationals 2013: PowerSave Campus Awards California Champions

Over 150 universities are actively competing to save energy in the nation’s third-ever round of Campus Conservation Nationals.  This initiative, organized by the Alliance to Save Energy in partnership with Lucid Design Group, the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Wildlife Federation, brings together nearly students from 150 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada to save both energy and water in their residence halls. 

Over 150 colleges and universities are actively competing to save energy in the nation’s third-ever round of “Campus Conservation Nationals” (CCN) before it concludes on April 6.

The EE Eight: Energy-Efficient Campuses in the NCAA Basketball Tournament

With college basketball’s March Madness tournament just around the corner, the Alliance to Save Energy has compiled a list of the most energy-efficient campuses entering the NCAA competition.

Students of all ages are accustomed to being graded on their work and ranked against their peers. It’s a common practice for just about everything in society from education to politics, but athletics is perhaps one of the most scrutinized and ranked fields out there. With college basketball’s March Madness tournament just around the corner the Alliance to Save Energy has compiled its picks for the most energy-efficient campuses entering the NCAA competition.

Annual PowerSave Campus Summit calls for Action on Energy Efficiency

The 9th Annual PowerSave Campus Energy Efficency Summit convened 150 students and staff from California campuses to further energy efficiency education and careers.

The Alliance to Save Energy convened 150 attendees last month at the 9th Annual PowerSave Campus Energy Efficiency Summit at UCLA.  The theme, Action: Energy Efficiency, served as a reminder of the actions we can take ourselves and encourage others to take to save energy and the planet.  Events like this are meant to bring the leaders of this campus movement together - both students and staff - to strategize and fine tune the energy efficiency message and actions.

This fact sheet summarizes California Proposition 39, which creates a clean energy fund that could receive $2.75 billion. Prop 39 amends California’s Public Resources Code and the Revenue and Taxation Code to close a tax loophole for multistate businesses, increasing state revenues by an estimated $1.1 billion dollars per year.

Clean Energy Job Creation Fund

On November 6, 2012, California voters approved Proposition 39, which creates a clean energy fund that could receive $2.75 billion. Prop 39 amends California’s Public Resources Code and the Revenue and Taxation Code to close a tax loophole for multistate businesses, increasing state revenues by an estimated $1.1 billion dollars per year. Half of this sum is to be transferred to the Clean Energy Job Creation Fund created by this proposition. After a five-year period, all generated revenues will go to California’s General Fund.

2012 Wrap-Up: The Alliance to Save Energy's Year in Review

The year 2012 was a milestone for us at the Alliance to Save Energy: We celebrated 35 years of advancing energy efficiency, and laid solid groundwork for another 35 years. Throughout the the year, we charged forward with consumer outreach, on-the-ground projects, and political advocacy to inject “using less, doing more” into people’s daily lives. These are our proudest moments of 2012.

The year 2012 was a milestone for us at the Alliance to Save Energy: We celebrated 35 years of advancing energy efficiency, and laid solid groundwork for another 35 years. Alliance President Kateri Callahan rang in the New Year – and new lighting efficiency standards – by appearing with New York City’s LED-lit Times Square Ball.
