Taking Actions to Become Efficient

Industry surveys indicate that, mainly through procedural and behavioral changes, the average plant can reduce its energy consumption by 10 to 20 percent. Many companies are joining in to do their part in becoming energy efficient.

At the Alliance, we provide numerous forums for the business community to showcase the work it is doing to be energy efficient. Representatives from the business community share their firsthand experiences with implementing energy efficiency throughout their business practices at the Alliance's many speaking engagements, including our annual Great Energy Efficiency Day; Evening with the Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards Dinner; and international energy efficiency conference, EE Global.

An ad showing real U.S. workers employed in clean energy jobs is part of a PA educational media campaign aimed at demonstrating the wide scope and large number of jobs that clean energy investments can bring to the U.S. economy and stimulating a grassroots movement in support of clean energy and climate change legislation.

Ads Urge Action on Federal Energy, Climate Legislation

Washington, D.C., September 22, 2009 - A newspaper ad campaign showing real U.S. workers employed in clean energy jobs in Pennsylvania’s renewable energy and energy efficiency industries have begun appearing throughout the state, heralding the launch of the Clean Energy Business Campaign for America.In coming months, the campaign will place such print ads around the country, featuring the true-life stories of such workers in other states.

New Energy Efficiency Tax Credit Bills Introduced in U.S. Senate

In August 2009, Senators Snowe (R-Maine) and Bingaman (D-N.M.) released a package of bills that would extend certain tax credits for energy efficiency in homes and industries, and create several new credits. While the three bills would expand and extend existing credits, they would also aim to drive technological innovation by focusing incentives toward cutting edge projects and improvements.

The Green Routes to Work Act (HR. 3271)

Introduced July 21,  2009, by Representative Earl Blumenauer (D) of Oregon’s 3rd District, the Green  Routes to Work Act (HR. 3271) aims to incentivize workers to commute by  modes other than single-occupancy vehicles – including public transit, bicycle  and vanpools – through adjustments to existing federal tax exemptions and  deductions for commuting. At the time of writing, the bill has been referred to  the House Committees on Ways and Means and Oversight and Government Reform.

The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) significantly advanced energy efficiency in its region by awarding Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Va., $500,000 for their winning entry in a regional competition to save energy and money and create jobs.

Washington, D.C., July 20, 2009 – The Alliance to Save Energy today congratulated the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) for significantly advancing energy efficiency in its region by awarding Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Va., $500,000 for their winning entry in a regional competition to save energy and money and create jobs.

A panel of national experts selected theirs among 16 proposals submitted based on depth of community involvement and support, comprehensiveness and innovation in program design, and reasonableness of project objectives.

Summary of First Senate Hearing on Climate Change

On Tuesday, July 7, the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee held the first of several planned hearings intended to help the committee develop climate change legislation. This legislation, which will take  the form of a cap-and-trade program, is to be integrated into the existing  American Clean Energy Leadership Act of 2009, which passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on June 17. EPW Chairman Barbara Boxer intends to base the legislation on the cap-and-trade title of the American Clean Energy  and Security Act of 2009, which passed the House on June 26.
