The White House Office of Public Engagement released this clean energy research and development (R&D) fact sheet, “President Obama’s Plan to Win the Future by Investing in Clean Energy R&D,” the night of Obama's Jan. 25, 2011, State of the Union address.
In his State of the Union address, Obama called for new investments in R&D that will grow the U.S. economy and allow it to remain competitive in the 21st century. That is why Obama's budget will propose over $8 billion for research, development and deployment investments in clean energy technology programs. This represents a one-third increase in funding, which will be paid for with resources that the U.S. government now spends on subsidizing fossil fuels, according to the fact sheet.
The administration’s clean energy R&D priorities focus on developing cutting-edge technologies with real-world applications to advance a clean energy economy, increase industrial and manufacturing efficiency, reduce energy demand in buildings, and get 1 million advanced technology vehicles on the road by 2015.
