Southern Company is one of the largest producers of electricity in the United States. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., and incorporated in 1945, Southern Company has become a super-regional energy company with more than 40,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Southeast. Working through its five regulated retail electric utilities across Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi, Southern Company covers a 120,000 square mile service territory and serves approximately 4 million customers.

Focused on providing leadership to its customers and within the utility sector, Southern Company's business activities include investments in wireless communications services, synthetic fuels and leveraged lease projects, energy-related services and natural gas marketing. Southern Company also is a recognized leader in environmental research, investing more than $1.5 billion on environmental controls and other efforts to help significantly reduce emissions and to improve efficient and cost-effective generation and emission control technologies.
