Former LBNL Energy-Efficiency Expert Laura Van Wie McGrory Named Alliance to Save Energy International Programs Director
Washington, D.C., September 2, 2008 – The Alliance to Save Energy has appointed Laura Van Wie McGrory as its new director of international programs. Since 1999, she had been a program manager with the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and since 2007 was the head of the lab’s Washington, D.C., office. Prior to 1999 she worked for four years with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
At the Alliance, Van Wie McGrory will oversee a team of 10 staff and consultants working in the organization’s D.C. headquarters and four other countries. The Alliance’s international programs help developing nations grow their economies in energy-efficient directions.
At LBNL, Van Wie McGrory divided her time between supporting development of U.S. appliance and lighting energy efficiency standards and supporting the lab’s international energy-efficiency projects. She co-led the PEPS program (Promoting an Energy-efficient Public Sector) and was the U.S. liaison for the Buildings and Appliances Task Force of the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) and a U.S. delegate to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Expert Group on Energy Efficiency and Conservation.
Before joining the lab, Van Wie McGrory was a consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Global Change Division, the World Bank, and the U.N. Development Programme’s Sustainable Energy and Environment Division.
Alliance Vice President for Programs Jeffrey Harris noted, “Before working at LBNL, Laura worked for a variety of organizations on international energy and environmental policies. So she certainly knows the energy-efficiency world and has well-established relationships with many of its key players. During her tenure with LBNL – an Alliance Associate – Laura was involved in several Alliance committees and events.”
Van Wie McGrory has a B.A. in Geography and Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College and a Master of International Affairs, focusing on international environmental policy, from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
