Continuing tight supplies and higher prices for natural gas are likely to boost home heating bills this winter, especially if it’s a cold one. But consumers can keep their energy bills from skyrocketing by adopting energy-efficiency measures recommended by the Alliance to Save Energy.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to allow your heating system to remain off overnight and while the house is empty during the day, but turn the system on to warm it up shortly before family members arise in the morning and return home in the evening.
  • Maximize the life and efficiency of your heating system by having an annual professional “tune up” and by cleaning or replacing filters once a month.
  • Plug up “energy leaks” with weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows.
  • Properly insulated attics, walls, floors, basements, and ceilings can prevent loss of up to 20 or 30 percent of your home’s energy. (See the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association's (NAIMA's) consumer website, www.SimplyInsulate.com.
  • Use foam gaskets to seal leaks around light switches and electrical outlets on exterior walls.
  • In colder climates with a significant heating season, energy-efficient windows retain more heat, permit less air leakage, and provide warmer window surfaces for improved indoor comfort. Ask your supplier for energy-efficient windows with double panes and low-emissive coatings so you can star gaze in comfort this winter. • Allow the sun to help heat your home by keeping blinds of sun-exposed windows open in the daytime and closed at night for maximum heat retention.
  • Consider planting evergreen trees on the north side of your home to block winter winds.
