The Sierra Club and the University of Toledo are proud to present an interactive workshop and trade show highlighting the benefits of clean energy in NW Ohio.  The Toledo Clean Energy Workshop (RSVP by August 9th -- please see below!) aims to educate the UT community and the public on the details of how clean energy and energy efficiency can support a cleaner environment, provide jobs, and in many cases save money.

Where:  University of Toledo Student Union:  Ingman Room and Trimble Lounge.  Campus Map

Cost:  Free.  Limited snacks will be available, so bring a lunch or $ for lunch -- the Student Union food vendors (Subway and other food vendors) will be open 12-8 pm.

When:  Saturday, August 18th, 2012 from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Each of the topics (Solar and Wind in NW Ohio, Home Energy Efficiency, Environmental Economics, and Educational Opportunities in Renewable Energy) will be addressed at a roundtable. The roundtable format will enable each topic's experts to provide an overview of important issues, and then open the topic up for questions and discussion.

In addition, you'll have the opportunity to join a tour of the Scott Park Campus of Energy and Innovation, and become familiar with the solar energy (photovoltaics) and wind energy technology in use there.

Please, by August 9th, click here to RSVP!

Our Topic Leaders

Dr. Alvin Compaan is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of the Physics and Astronomy Department at The University of Toledo. His research in photovoltaic materials and devices has been funded by many federal and state grants and his group has collaborated with several industrial groups in photovoltaics. He is a co-founder of Xunlight 26 Solar which is commercializing flexible and transparent PV for window and auto sunroof applications. Al and his wife, Mary, have practical experience with PV applications by powering their home with a grid-connected rooftop PV array manufactured in Perrysburg, OH, by First Solar. Their 4.3 kW system generates nearly all the electricity needed for their home as well as for Al’s electric truck used for daily commuting.

Katie Hoepfl is an alumni of the University of Toledo, Physics Department. Her research has been centered around analysis of solar and wind energy portfolios and was recently published in the International Journal of Technology, Policy & Management. She now works at First Solar, Inc. as a Reliability Engineer.

John Witte is the President and founding partner in Advanced Distributed Generation (ADG), specializing in the design and installation of photovoltaic systems.  Mr. Witte has 35 years of experience in the solar industry.  Mr. Witte has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, and is NABCEP certified for PV and solar thermal installations.  Mr. Witte is a member of Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association's Professional Certification Board, and is an ISPQ Certified Instructor for Photovoltaic Classes.  ADG has installed over 150 PV systems with a total rated capacity of 5.2 megawatts, and continues to work to lower the cost of installed PV by standardizing design and construction practices.

Prof. Sanjay Khare has broad interests in production, consumption of energy and its flow through the economy. Particular interest currently focuses on assessing quantity of fossil fuels available and quality and quantity of renewable energy technologies. He has initiated and currently directs the Professional in Photovoltaics Masters degree program and the Minor in Renewable Energy at UT

More Information

Reihm Farms, one of NW Ohio's finest family farms that also serves Toledo and the UT community through their Community Shares Agriculture program, will provide fresh produce for snacking during the event. Chef Ed Logan of Terra Community College will assist with the preparation.

To make this a truly sustainable event, we're asking our participants to bring their own reusable table service (plate, mug, cup, fork, napkin). We'll have some available just in case, but please try to bring what you'll need to enjoy our fresh, local refreshments.

In order to allow parents to attend sessions, basic kids' activities (ages 6+) will be available onsite (RSVP required by Aug. 9th).  So bring your kids, and let them do their thing while you attend one or more of the workshop sessions.

Sponsors and Supporters of this event include Ohio's Sierra Club, The University of Toledo, UT's School for Solar and Advanced Renewable Energy, and Reihm Farms.
