Joseph M. McGuire was named President of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) in January, 1999 and serves as its chief executive. AHAM is the national trade association of the home appliance industry including the manufacturers of the vast majority of home appliances sold in the United States as well as firms that supply and service these manufacturers. AHAM is an accredited Standards Development Organization with the American National Standards Institute. AHAM is extensively involved in the development of national appliance efficiency laws and regulations as well as the voluntary product safety standards process. AHAM is located in Washington, D.C. and was founded in 1967. AHAM’s website is www.aham.org.
Mr. McGuire has vast experience in energy, environmental and consumer product safety policy issues. He has testified numerous times before the U.S. Congress and has represented the appliance industry before network news programs and major electronic and media outlets. He led a broad based coalition of over 200 organizations in support of the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act and has been involved in several stakeholder negotiations on appliance efficiency standards.
Prior to joining AHAM, McGuire was Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs for AlliedSignal Inc. (now Honeywell) an advanced technology manufacturer. Previously he served as Senior Vice President with the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. He also held positions with the National Association of Home Builders, the U.S. Department of Energy and its predecessor agency, the Energy Research and Development Administration.
He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from St. John Fisher College and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He holds a Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
McGuire currently serves on the Board of the American National Standards Institute and the Board of ASAE, where is also Secretary Treasurer. He formerly served on the National Association of Manufacturers’ Board of Directors and chaired its Council of Manufacturing Associations. He is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Committee of 100. McGuire resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife Mary and three sons, Garrett, Connor, and Dylan.
