In Justin's Words

  • Name: Justin Hanson
  • Campus: San Diego State University
  • Studying: Sustainability and Environmental Studies

Career, career, career.  We college students hear this word thrown around like a hot potato.  Nobody wants to hold onto it because it is frightening, so we are quick to – and great at – either dodging the question, or appeasing the questioner. I, for one, was convinced a Finance major would best serve me during this game of hot potato.

Though I held onto the Finance-engraved hot potato for a long time, I was lucky enough to let go of it before it burned me. I like numbers, but I am passionate about creating a healthier environment for future generations and the many organisms we occupy Earth with. I am much more confident and inspired to become a key ingredient in developing a more efficient, cleaner and all-around happier building industry.

Green Campus has helped me realize that following my passion will satisfy my desire for internal, intrinsic success; and without intrinsic success does external success matter?  I am excited to be graduating soon with a degree in Sustainability and Environmental Studies and begin doing what I love.

My internship with Green Campus not only was a motivating force to follow my dreams. It also gave me the skills necessary to realize my career goals. I have become a better manager of time, people and projects. I can perform building audits, give recommendations on how to improve building efficiency, and I can successfully communicate with organization CEOs, presidents, lawyers and managers.  The Green Campus Program teaches their interns how to become a force to be reckoned with, and this factor alone may be what gets you hired.
