This letter from the Alliance president was included in the 2010 Year-End Review.

The year 2010 ushered in a “decade of energy efficiency” in which today’s leaders and consumers are paying more attention to saving energy than ever before. Year one of this decade brought with it innovations in technology, policy and the way we receive our energy – and the Alliance was at the forefront of these changes at every step.

In our continued fight to make energy efficiency America’s fuel of choice, in 2010 we focused on educating consumers and policymakers about this clean and affordable option. We also spearheaded grassroots projects across six continents with real-time results in schools, buildings, manufacturing plants, communities and homes.

To maintain our position as the world’s leading voice for energy efficiency, we continued growing in scope and size. Since 2002, we have added 38 new staff members, bringing our ranks to 84 at the close of 2010. Meanwhile, our Associates program grew by more than 30 organizations to a total of 177, drawing together a strong chorus of voices from energy services, retail, transportation, telecommunications, utilities and more.

Those voices helped us start the decade of energy efficiency with a bang. One of the achievements I’m most proud of is our success at pushing through the biggest improvement ever in the U.S. national model building energy codes.

On the communications front, revamped our own Alliance website, ASE.org, as well as created a dedicated consumer-oriented website, LivingEfficiently.org. Meanwhile, our affiliated Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance implemented major energy efficiency retrofit programs in dozens of communities across the Southeast region of the United States. Our Green Schools Program expanded exponentially in that region, as well as around the world.

We also worked with international government and industry leaders to launch an energy efficiency organization in Europe – the European Alliance to Save Energy, which already is racking up policy victories.

Given these impressive initiatives, there’s no doubt about it: 2010 was a watershed year for the Alliance. As we begin year two of the decade of energy efficiency, the Alliance will continue to offer sustainable solutions to energy challenges facing this generation, and generations to come. Here’s to an energy-efficient decade!
