Dear Friends,
Our policy work is really heating up here in Washington, along with the weather! After last month’s introduction of the Shaheen-Portman energy efficiency bill (S. 1000), the Alliance policy team has been working doggedly on the Hill to line up support in advance of the June 9 Senate Energy & Natural Resources (ENR) Committee hearing.
At the Senate ENR Committee hearing, I will be testifying on the great potential of S. 1000. Watch the live webcast at 9:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday, or catch it in the Committee’s archived webcasts.
Meanwhile, we recently got word that the appliance standards bill will be introduced in the House this week by Rep. John Sullivan (R-Okla.)and Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.).
Help Us Secure Strong Federal EE Policies
If you’re not yet engaged and want to join the important work we are doing on Capitol Hill, I urge you to join our EE Coalition – it’s easy, costs you nothing and provides an avenue for direct involvement in federal advocacy. For example, the EE Coalition members are meeting early this week with members of the Senate ENR Committee to promote S. 1000.
The EE Coalition can keep you abreast of these important developments – and opportunities like high-level meetings on the Hill – through its weekly conference calls every Monday at 4 p.m. Contact Nancy Gonzalez to participate.
Have Breakfast with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen
To whet your policy appetite even more, we will be hosting an exclusive EE Policy Perspectives breakfast on the Hill with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) on Tuesday, June 23 at 8:30 a.m.
Sen. Shaheen is the honorary chair of the Alliance and currently chairs the ENR Subcommittee on Water and Power. At the breakfast, she will discuss the national energy efficiency strategy she introduced with Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), as well as her vision for energy efficiency in the 112th Congress. Register soon – seats are limited and going quickly!
New Alliance Policy Resources: Smart Meters, Smart Grid & Standards
As you read through our latest news, you will find several great policy-related resources. We worked with ACEEE to bring you state-by-state fact sheets showing how energy efficiency appliance standards are creating jobs and saving consumers money in each of our 50 states. In addition, we also are pleased to report on the revised e-KNOW bill, which seeks to ensure that consumers can access needed information from smart meters. Speaking of which, don’t miss our white paper on realizing the energy efficiency potential of the smart grid.
As summer kicks into high gear, I hope you’ll join us in advancing our ever-evolving initiatives!
Best,

Kateri Callahan
