The International Standards Organization (ISO) officially announced the long-awaited ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard on June 15, 2011 and held a launch ceremony for the standard two days later.

The ISO 50001 standard is expected to influence up to 60% of global energy use and provides an internationally-recognized framework for a wide variety of organizations to manage their energy use efficiently and improve their energy performance. The standard is now available for purchase at the American National Standards Institute.

By conforming to the standard, industrial plants, commercial and institutional buildings, and other organizations will demonstrate their commitment to sustainability to their customers, investors and elected officials. In the U.S. conformance to ISO 50001 is a foundational element of the Superior Energy Performance (SEP) program, a voluntary certification program for industrial facilities and commercial buildings.
