Pending confirmation from the Senate, a former Alliance Board Member will be tasked with "greening" the Navy. Last week, Jackie Pfannenstiel (pictured), former chair of the California Energy Commission and former Alliance Board Member, was nominated by President Obama to serve as Assistant Secretary for Installations and Environment, a civilian leadership position in the Navy Department.

If confirmed, Pfannenstiel would be responsible for more than 75,000 buildings and related facilities supporting Navy and Marine operations around the world. This position plays a key role in the base relocation and closure processes, while also managing much of the environmental remediation on Naval and Marine facilities, and providing general facilities management and environmental oversight.

In addition to these responsibilities, Pfannenstiel would also assist Navy Secretary Ray Mabus in his ambitious program to “green” the Navy. Consistent with the President’s strong environmental stewardship, Secretary Mabus has a broad vision embracing best practices in energy efficiency, renewable energy, alternative transportation fuels and land use to reduce the energy use and carbon emissions of the Navy.
