Energy Hog in OhioThis year, more than 8,240 students in Ohio will learn about where energy comes from, how we use energy and the importance of energy efficiency and conservation. Thanks to funding provided by the Ohio Department of Development, Office of Energy Efficiency, the Alliance to Save Energy will provide energy education resources to elementary school teachers in Ohio free of charge.

The Alliance’s “Real, Live” Energy Hog School Program makes it easy for teachers to introduce energy education into classrooms. Participating teachers receive the Energy Hog Challenge – a fun set of classroom lessons and activities that guides students through calculating household energy use, investigating a hog-infested home at the online media center and applying what they’ve learned to their own homes via the Energy Hog Scavenger Hunt.

For those teachers who want to do more, the Energy Hog mascot costume and a ready-made skit are available for a school assembly program, which brings a “real, live” Energy Hog into the school. Students scream with horror and delight at the presence of the Energy Hog, and the performance reinforces and makes memorable the lessons they’ve learned in the classroom.
