The Alliance and its design team worked diligently to include many energy-efficiency and environmentally friendly elements into its new office space. We also decided to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (aka Tradable Renewable Credits or Green Tags) equal to 100% of our estimated electricity consumption for the next two years. The Alliance selected Windcurrent to provide us with Green-e certified renewable energy credits.
These credits will aid the Alliance in its pursuit of a LEED Silver rating through the U.S. Green Building Council. But more importantly, purchasing these credits provides environmental benefits by reducing the demand for electricity from a conventional generating source. According to the EPA, electricity production contributes 40% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, 20% of nitrogen oxides, 65% of sulfur dioxide, and 41% of mercury emissions. The Alliance hopes to encourage others to consider renewable energy credits. Large corporations, municipalities, government agencies, small organizations in tenant spaces (such as the Alliance), and even homeowners can purchase renewable energy credits for all of their electricity requirements or any portion of their consumption.
