The Alliance, in partnership with Policy Navigation Group and Process Energy Services, LLC, recently finalized the results of its first Watergy assessment in the United States with the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority (BCWSA) located in Bucks County, Pa. The assessment, which included seven BCWSA facilities, identified opportunities for more than 4 million kWh in annual energy savings valued at approximately $361,000. These energy efficiency opportunities represent over 20% of BCWSA’s annual energy expenses. Combined, these opportunities offer a simple payback of just 2.2 years on the required investment.

The Watergy team’s energy-saving recommendations included capital equipment upgrades, operational changes and the implementation of best practices in energy management including pumping system assessments. Through adoption of the energy management recommendations, BCWSA will be prepared to comply with the forthcoming ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard and well-positioned to participate in Superior Energy Performance, a voluntary plant certification program expected to launch formally in fall 2011.

Watergy: Then and Now

Since 1997, the Alliance’s Watergy program has demonstrated impressive energy, water and cost savings in the treatment and pumping of water in more than 100 municipalities worldwide. Historically, the Watergy program has focused on developing countries, implementing projects in 16 countries with significant energy efficiency needs.

Based on this proven track record and interest from American municipalities, the Alliance partnered with Policy Navigation Group, Process Energy Services, LLC, and the American Water Works Association to assemble a team to implement this program in the United States. Watergy has now established its program as a sound cost-containment strategy for municipal water systems throughout the United States.

Seminar Spotlights Water-Energy Efficiency Opportunities for Municipalities

Treating and transporting water accounts for about 3% of annual energy consumption in the United States. To raise awareness of the water-energy link, as well as the capabilities of the Watergy program, the Alliance will host an informative lunchtime seminar – EE Noon: The Watergy Approach – on Wednesday, May 4 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Alliance’s D.C. office

Featured speakers will include Jonathan Gledhill, President of Policy Navigation Group, as well as Lee Ferrell of Schneider Electric, a registered professional engineer with more than 25 years of water and wastewater energy management experience. The speakers will discuss the significance of energy efficiency in the water and wastewater industry and will highlight projects undertaken by the Alliance’s Watergy program.

Alliance Welcomes New Clean Water Associate

Illustrative of the Alliance’s ongoing commitment to advance energy efficiency in water and wastewater treatment systems, the Alliance welcomes NACWA—the National Association of Clean Water Agencies—as a new Associate. NACWA is a leader in environmental policy and a trusted technical resource for large municipal wastewater treatment agencies.
