The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) honored 14 Alliance Associates for extraordinary achievements in energy efficiency at the 2011 Energy Star Awards ceremony, held April 12 in Washington, D.C.

The Energy Star program, founded in 1992, has become a national symbol of energy efficiency. Energy Star is often recognized for distinguishing energy-efficient appliances, but the program also boasts a rich history of promoting organizational energy management. Partners of the Energy Star program pledge to manage energy use and continuously improve energy efficiency. Each year, Energy Star recognizes 50 program participants for Sustained Excellence and 40 partners as Partner of the Year, with additional accolades for Excellence in Promotion and other areas.

From a pool of 20,000+ participants in the Energy Star program, 111 manufacturers, retailers, schools, hospitals, real estate companies and home builders were honored for a variety of accomplishments, such as manufacturing more energy efficient products, increasing the energy efficiency of their manufacturing processes, improving efficiency in buildings and spreading the message of efficiency to consumers.

Energy Star for Industry

Out of the 111 winners for this year’s awards, 15 are industrial companies that exemplify an assortment of innovative approaches to energy efficiency: global programs across diverse businesses, production operator involvement, engaging the entire employee base in energy efficiency at work and at home, special funding mechanisms for energy projects, helping suppliers improve efficiency and reducing related risks to businesses, and benchmarking and sharing information across partner companies.

"The Energy Star Industrial Program has been a vital partner in helping 3M identify strategies to improve the efficiency of our operations both in the U.S. and around the world," said John Woodworth, senior vice president, 3M Corporate Supply Chain Operations. "During our 12-year partnership with the program, we have used the 'Guidelines for Energy Management' to benchmark our program with other companies, which in turn has helped us reduce our global energy usage. Given its proven success, we strongly support the Industrial Program and look forward to continuing to work with the Energy Star team for many years to come."
