January 29-31, Long Beach, Calif. – The Alliance convened over 170 attendees at the 7th Annual Green Campus Energy Efficiency Summit at California State University, Long Beach. Distinguished speakers included City of Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, Cal State Long Beach President F. King Alexander, Institute for Energy Efficiency Executive Director Dave Auston, and Alliance President Kateri Callahan.
The Summit consisted of intensive student energy efficiency trainings, followed by facilitated project planning and best practice sharing between the students and the distinguished faculty, staff and administrators from their respective campuses. Alliance Associates also attended, including Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, Sempra Energy, Honeywell, the Building Performance Institute (BPI), and the U.S. Green Building Council.
From Energy Assessments to Career Counseling
Key sessions of the Summit were:
- Academic Infusion Advisory Group — cross section of existing sustainability academic infusion efforts; strategizing regarding Green Campus’ role in further curricula development and institutionalization
- Hands- on office and kitchen auditing trainings — taught by a certified BPI instructor and Green Campus alumni from the Food Service Technology Center, respectively
- Energy Career Panel — featuring sustainability professionals Honeywell Business Development Director Pam Wallace, BPI CEO Larry Zarker, PG&E Manager of Energy Centers Charles Segerstrom, and Los Angeles County Office of Sustainability Program Manager Lauren Rank
- Breakout Activity: Making Energy Visible — integrated cross-cutting groups to examine opportunities for energy efficiency in higher education
- Green Campus Alumni Panel — featuring program alumni to discuss their transition to working in the sustainability field full-time
- Peer-led Technology Stations — fast-paced rotation stations to teach students about cutting-edge energy efficiency technologies
