PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL DISTRICT 8480 Hagys Mill Road Philadelphia, PA 19128 Earth Apple Awards 2002-2003 Honorable Mention Students in the Green Woods Charter School adopted theoretical and practical approaches to the concepts of energy efficiency and energy conservation. Their activities built on each other leading to a successful, results-oriented approach. The wide range of activities they were involved in included conducting audit reports, building solar powered battery rechargers, and solar powered cars (using knowledge gained from building the battery rechargers). The students' interest in the environment led to a very exciting project for third, fourth, and fifth graders – Architecture Education. Two classes participated in an 8-week program with the Foundation for Architecture with a goal to apply the knowledge obtained through the Green Schools program to the design and creation of a Green School building. Using data obtained from their energy audits and ideas on incorporating landscaping techniques, the classes created models of their school highlighting environmental friendly and “green” changes. One class even built a futuristic model of their school including an atrium, skylights, breathing walls, and a green roof. Besides incorporating energy efficiency into their activities, Green Woods Charter School also created a school-wide recycling initiative, promoting it through holding environmental blitzes and designing and selling books on recycling. The students at the Green Woods Charter School have achieved a pro-active stance towards energy and the environment. |
