The Alliance’s program in Thailand centers on providing technical, strategic, and fundraising assistance to both new and established NGOs. The Alliance assists energy efficiency and related organizations to develop concise mission statements and strategic plans, identify key legislative issues impeding the spread of energy efficiency, and leverage funding from multilateral, bilateral, and foundation sources. With support from the US-Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP), the Alliance assisted in the creation of the Energy Efficiency Development Association (EEDA), a non-profit association comprised of energy efficiency technology and service providers.
EEDA was established officially in December 2001 as a Thai non-profit organization to support and further develop energy efficiency in Thailand. The Association’s members comprise various companies, organizations and individuals, including manufacturers, suppliers, equipment distributors, energy conservation and efficiency consultants, performance contractors, as well as members of the general public interested in energy conservation activities. EEDA is also supported strongly by an Advisory Board comprised of influential members throughout Thailand’s energy industry. The Association’s main objectives are to promote energy conservation and efficiency policies, government-sponsored programs and technologies to create job opportunities as well as rapid economic expansion and environmental development for Thailand. Such objectives are to: • Encourage Thai society to appreciate the vitality of energy efficiency; • Promote tangible energy efficiency policies and plans;• Advocate for future energy efficiency policy and program development; • Encourage financial institutions to support investment in energy efficiency projects; • Promote and develop personnel and agencies participating in energy efficiency programs to ensure their capabilities and expertise in energy efficiency; and • Establish networks among parties involved in energy efficiency, including various organizations, both in the public and private sectors, nationally and internationally.
EEDA is one of the leading organizations promoting and strengthening alternative energy and energy efficiency programs in Thailand, as cited in the bi-lateral agreement signed between US Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Surakiart Sathirathai during the signing of a bi-lateral Framework for Economic Cooperation between the two countries (http://www.state.gov/p/eap/rls/ot/6911.htm).
