EEIP in Mexico

The two principal activities of the Energy Efficiency Industry Partnership (EEIP) program in Mexico have included educational seminars and industry policy forums. Through these programs, USAID and the Alliance have helped Mexican enterprises reduce their energy costs, increase their productivity, and lower their pollution. Description of EEIP in Spanish.

Development Impact:

Since 1995, the Alliance’s EEIP has provided more than 2,000 energy managers and other representatives from over 700 industrial, commercial, hotel, and hospital facilities with information and access to energy-efficiency technologies and services through educational seminars. The Alliance has administered 29 sessions featuring more than 215 presentations by 85 different U.S. and Mexican energy-efficiency companies.

These seminars continue to be an effective venue for energy consumers to learn about various energy-saving products and services, and for energy-efficiency businesses to raise awareness about their offerings. In addition, they are a low-cost means for Mexican organizations to provide training and education to their constituents.

Alliance Partners:

To further raise the profile of energy efficiency, the Partnership has benefited from the participation of representatives from the government energy conservation agency, La Comisión Nacional para el Ahorro de Energía (CONAE) the non-profit financing institution, El Fideicomiso para el Ahorro de Energía Eléctrica (FIDE), and the Energy Engineers Association - La Asociación de Técnicos y Profesionistas En Aplicación Energética (ATPAE).More recently, the Alliance is also working with Energía, Tecnología, y Educación (ENTE) to organize efficiency seminars for representatives from industrial, hospital, hotel, and government facilities, as well as municipalities.

Key to the success of these educational seminars has been the city and regional trade associations that have partnered with the Alliance to offer their members the energy efficiency seminars. These Partners include: La Asociación de Hoteles de Quintana Roo, AC; La Asociación Mexicana de Hoteles y Moteles, AC; La Asociación Mexicana de Hoteles y Moteles de Tabasco, AC; La Cámara de la Industria de Construcción de Veracruz, AC; La Cámara de la Industria de Transformación de Nuevo Leon (CAINTRA); Cámara Nacional de Industria de transformación –Puebla (CANACINTRA); El Centro Empresarial de Reynosa, SP (COPARMEX); and several Maquiladora and Hospital Associations.

Energy Efficiency Technologies and Services

The energy efficiency technologies and services were presented by over 85 U.S. and Mexican energy efficiency companies. Please click here to view a complete list of all technologies and services involved in the effort.

2003 Policy Efforts in Mexico - Industry Working Group

In its work with energy efficiency technology and service providers, the Alliance created an industry working group with more than 20 high-level representatives of energy efficiency companies, which met to discuss the energy efficiency industry's role in Mexico's energy future. The goals of the working group were to: 1) communicate the benefits of improved energy efficiency to the nation's environment and economy; 2) promote energy-saving equipment and services as a means to reduce production costs and energy expenses and improve reliability; and 3) work with government and non-governmental organizations to engage policymakers on energy and regulatory issues of interest to the energy efficiency industry, such as utility restructuring, national energy planning, alternative financing, equipment standards, and building codes.

This policy effort resulted in two outcomes:

EEIP in Mexico - Success Story

An evaluation of the Energy Efficiency Industry Partnership in Mexico was carried out by the Alliance to Save Energy, to assess results from the seminars that were held between 1995 and 2003. The evaluation estimates that the program is saving participants approximately 270 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, 182 billion BTUs of natural gas, and $25.8 million on deferred yearly energy costs – which amounts to enough money to power 215,000 Mexican homes annually. The evaluation also notes that the average EEIP presenter earned at least $200,000 in post-seminar sales.
