In June I attended and presented at two events in Colorado, where I encountered some thought-provoking debates and inspiring developments in the realm of energy efficiency. The first was at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA). This is a Colorado co-op that’s taking serious energy-efficient initiatives for its customers, such as subsidizing the installation of ground-source heat pumps (called the “Co-Z Loop Tariff”, they call it), and providing essential consumer education on energy efficiency. I talked about the importance of energy efficiency for economies, and the role utilities can play in improving demand-side management – all of which was quite fitting, considering the terrific work DMEA has done! My next stop was the National Energy and Utility Affordability Conference (NEUAC), where talk was focused on how low-income households can meet their energy needs in a cost-effective manner. I presented on the Alliance To Save Energy’s Drive $marter Challenge, which has so far succeeded in saving consumers millions of dollars’ worth of gas – not to mention the avoidance of 44,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. There is so much consumers can do to lower their energy costs through energy-efficient practices, and the possibilities expand once utilities join the effort. Energy efficiency truly is an endless resource that keeps on giving – it’s up to us how we use it! |
