Third One-Run Loss Leaves Watts Searching for Answers

June 10, 2008: Watts drop their 4th game in a row as PIRG delivers yet another devastating one-run loss at the bottom of the 7th.

Despite your Killer Watts’ run differential remaining sky-high at 14 runs, yet another game turned from cheers to tears to beers for the tanking emperors of efficiency.

The team welcomed newcomers Bion Bliss and Pauls Hlusko and Karrer on Tuesday along with veteran employee but rookie ball player Natasha Ewell and son Nevin. The green and optimistic recruits joined the ranks of the battle-hardened Watts as the away team against hyper-competitive and ultra-sober Public Interest Research Group PIRGs.

Reliable hitters Mann and Curley led off the top of the line up with a pair of singles. But only Curley managed to score on a double by Joe “Intern II” Teng.

The PIRGs showed their hitting prowess immediately, having stacked the top of their order with power-hitters. The sleeveless fiends of public interest knocked in 6 runs by the end of the 2nd inning that left the Watts down but not out.

Over the next four innings your fearless wardens of wattage dug their heels in and scraped back scoring one run in the 2nd inning and three in the 3rd to bring the game to within one.

PIRG seemed to regret their line-up stacking decision when they scored 0 runs as a string of less talented players and guys in jeans fell to the deft defensive play of pitcher David Mann and miraculous catches by Natasha and Nevin Ewell.

The game remained deadlocked as both teams honed in on the victory. Joe Teng hit his first home run of the season in the top of the 6th to keep the Watts within one. Going into the 7th inning, the Watts were down 7-8 and needed runs to keep the game going. The team rallied behind hits by Bion, Paul K, Nevin, Sean Garcia, and Usman Ahmad. Palpable energy hovered over the field as the Watts took a seemingly decisive two run lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Only three short outs separated the Watts from victory.

Sadly, the powers that be frowned on the Watts once again as PIRG started their last at bat at the top of their muscular order. A lead-off triple had the Watts nervous, but they regained their composure to throw a girl out at first. The sacrifice hit worked though, and one runner scored. A double and a triple followed, scoring another run. With one man on, one man out, the Watts were praying for a tie game.

The next play unfolded like a bad dream. The batter hit a dribbler to short, where Bion adroitly fielded the grounder and threw to first, forcing out the batter. Meanwhile the runner on third dashed home where Curley covered the plate. First baseman Cory Wagner saw zoomed a throw home, but the rumbling PIRG had already crossed home and ended all hopes of breaking the dismal losing streak.
